The Hearst Residence - lacurbed

The Hearst Residence – lacurbed

This is the former Southern California home of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and actress Marion Davies. The terra cotta structure is influenced by Italian and Spanish architectural designs. The massive old world style villa is 50,000 square feet and has 29 bedrooms, a private tennis court, three pools, a night club, and a theater sized screening room. When it was originally built in the 1920’s, it was the largest residence ever built in Southern California. Currently valued at $135,000,000, Hearst originally only paid $120,000 for the home.

  • Andrew

Considering all the really poor people living on less than $1.00 a day, not only are the prices of these residences obscene, the owners should feel ashamed of themselves.

    • K O

Considering most of the self-made billionaires rise up from poverty and achieve the impossible, they should be damn proud of their “obscenely-priced residences” and show off their wealth and success to butt-hurt people like u

      • Andrew

So you are one of those self-made billionaires?

        • Jaim

That is not to the point in any case.

          • Andrew

Actually it is. Many of these people who have made huge sums of money are some of the most unethical and dishonest people that you could ever meet.

          • In Vino Veritas

And of course Andrew, you would know that. Or not.

          • Andrew

Actually if bothered to read and understand history you would know that. But appears that you don’t.

          • shab

hey andrew, i support you, because the ones who are living under $1 a day are people too, who are tempted to live more, you think $1 a day makes a person happy? no it won’t we fortunate people should always speak for less fortunate ones, support them or else atleast stop discouraging people who are supporting.

          • Andrew

            Shab,
Thank you for your support. I totally agree with you. I have seen far too many people struggling to just eat regularly and have a proper home to live in.

          • wsurfs .

I’m guessing YOU probably know a bit about being unethical and dishonest from your own personal experience, don’t you, Andrew?

          • Andrew

Watched it first hand many times.

          • wsurfs .

            In your mirror..!?

    • PlainSpeaker

I agree with you, Andrew, but do you think these sorts of people have shame and they understand what is obscene?

      • Andrew

No I don’t. Why else do they flaunt it?

    • In Vino Veritas

And many of the people that live on less than $1 a day are happy Andrew. So they don’t really need you to try and speak for them.

      • Andrew

Really, you actually believe that? Have you been any other place than your back yard?

        • In Vino Veritas

Of course Andrew. Widely travelled I am. That is what qualifies me to make my comment. You are making the common mistake of believing that a western framework “fits all”, when in fact it does not.

          • Andrew

Where have I stated that a western view fits all? You have no idea what you are talking about do you? Most “widely” traveled people don’t brag about it either.

          • In Vino Veritas

No, they don’t Andrew. But you asked, and I answered. You have not made any claim about western views, but have made comment about my comment re people living on $1 being happy. My “western framework” was in response to that, as it seems to me that that is what you are inferring when you think that people on $1 are less than happy, and that living in a large house is obscene. Do you think that you can just write down anything and not expect it to be questioned?

          • Andrew

Okay, we now have established that you definitely do not have any kind of world view as you claim. How many happy people do you know that are living on less than a dollar a day? The answer is none. If you had any perspective on what is one of the root causes of political unrest worldwide you would know that economic deprivation is one of the major sources of that unrest. When most of the world economic resources are controlled by the few then people suffer and hence the unrest. History has many examples of this. The French Revolution being just one. The Bolsheviks in Russia being another. Africa has had many upheavals because of economic inequality and the middle east biggest problems also stem from this. You have no idea what you are talking about and only spouting off some simplistic westernized view of the world.

          • In Vino Veritas

Shifting the goalposts again are we Andrew? I don’t believe I claimed any “world view”, other than that there are people out there (having seen them) who are happy living on less than $1 per day.
Lets recap shall we? You made the statement that “Considering all the really poor people living on less than $1.00 a day, not only are the prices of these residences obscene, the owners should feel ashamed of themselves”. My response that some people are happy living on less than $1 per day. And now you are just trying muddy the waters since you have no coherent response to that. I have spent time or visited various Karen tribes in the Golden Triangle, Mbenga Pygmy’s in Sudan, Sambaru in Kenya, Himba in Namibia, the Lanis of Papua and others. They could not care less whether someone owns a massive mansion. Economic inequality is a Western concept. Given that the “people living on less than $1 a day” are not westerners, all you are doing, as I explained in a previous post, is trying to put that framework where it doesn’t belong.

          • Andrew

I haven’t muddied anything. You stated you are some kind of world traveler which was an attempt by you to support your so called world view. Most people are not happy living on less than $1.00 a day. I also bet that these tribes in Africa aren’t necessarily all that happy either. I have seen no one that is happy living in poverty. The Karen tribes have had their own rebellion in Burma because they are not happy with their situation. I have also seen the people in various locations in Africa and yes Papua New Guinea. They didn’t like living in poverty either and especially didn’t like the corruption of their governments and the lavish life styles of the local officials and their cronies. I have lived and worked outside of the US for most of my adult life. The last 23 years in Asia. I can tell you that corruption and crony capitalism has caused a lot of economic hardship and with the exception of the people benefiting from it. No one else was happy with the situation. Most of the people living in these big houses are the beneficiaries that I am speaking of. You have no idea what you are talking about and I am not going to waste my time with you anymore.

          • In Vino Veritas

Again Andrew, you are laying a western framework over primitive cultures who are happy tending cattle. They have mostly never had electricity, TV or running water, or any other western trappings. They are happy. The fact that some of the Karen rebelled against the Burmese Government had nothing to do with being poor, since their concept of wealth is different to yours. Your claim that I have no idea what I am talking about says more about you, and your ability to hold an argument, than it does me.

          • Andrew

            Go to this website. http://www.khrg.org/
The Karen people have started to fight for their rights because of the colonial British(western) influence and expectations for equal treatment from that experience. After you go through it please come and tell more about the happy life the Karen people have in Burma.

          • wsurfs .

Oh NO…!! YOU’RE not going to start all the BS British (western) colonial blah….blah….blah…crap…are you, you Obama butt kisser? Because someone in our history settled somewhere, Andrew, is probably why you have a job today…IF you even have a job or are willing to work and not one of those people who prefer to live off BIG GOVERNMENT….! I’ll take colonization over BIG GOVERNMENT any day of the week….!!!! We will always have the rich AND the poor among us…THAT is just a FACT….! You should educate yourself….! Find some good online educational websites and see what you can learn…!!!

          • Andrew

You are a real jerk aren’t you?

          • wsurfs .

Please sign up for some classes before they are all filled and you miss out on yet another real opportunity to improve your little bird brain….!!

          • wsurfs .

            I’m smart….! Unlike you..!

          • Mustafa

Why is it that everyday thousands of happy African people are drawn in Mediterranean Sea while migrating to EU? Why is it that total wealth of 4000 of rich western capitalists are more than the total GDP of all African countries combined?

          • Andrew

Happy people don’t migrate. They stay where they are happy.

          • wsurfs .

Name three people who YOU personally know who are living on $! a day, Andrew….!!

          • Andrew

            Obviously you are not rational.

          • wsurfs .

            You can’t, right? That’s what I thought..!! HAHAAHHAH…!! ;D

          • wsurfs .

            Obviously you can’t name them..!

          • Justin Hango

Come to Africa I’ll show you millions of people that get less than shark shit a day all so your beloved America can have an exorbitant lifestyle. You waste food your all fat as fuck. You have no bussines talking about people that make less than $1 a day. Yea I’m African from Namibia. Google it cause ur American eduction doest go further East than New York.
I drive a merchant been to Europe countless times. They have culture and class lived in LA for three years. I’m traveld and I still decided to come home. Because Africa is far better than that circu. Btw Africa the continent it’s not a country. I know you Americans have issues with geography.

          • Andrew

You are even a bigger idiot. I am against waste and exorbitant lifestyles. I think people should live better and not have wealth for just the few. I have also been to Africa the continent and several of its countries. You need to take a look again what I have previously said.

          • Squall

yeah Andrew i think this Justin didn’t read you before he talk.
i definitely agree with you. i scrolled throught these house and everytime i saw the cost i feel like damn why? how can 2 or 3 peoples live in a 100more rooms house with dozens of servants, they are there cleaning room that are never dirty, cooking 100 people food to feed 3 personnes, remaining food usually go to trash as some don’t want the servants to eat the same food they do. they should definitely feel ashamed. life is not about “I can so i do it”…
Wsurfs instead of just saying shuffle names here just let know as soon as you ready to meet with people that live with less than a $ a day.
wealth should have a limit for people with heart. all amount above this limit should be donated.

          • Abdulai

Actually many of the people that live in africa are more happier than you will find in the west. Go on the street of any African country and watch the genuine smiles on the faces of visibly poor people. Your happiness index is independent of the size of your mansion or bank account

          • Andrew

I have been to Africa. They maybe some smiling faces no one likes being poor.

          • wsurfs .

When a person is stating FACTS, that is NOT bragging…!!

          • Andrew

You have changed your name haven’t you? You are a joke. Rave on.

          • wsurfs .

You live in a jihadist cave…!!

          • wsurfs .

            You are insane..!

          • wsurfs .

            You are delusional…!! Poor thing…!

      • Albert

I’ve followed this argument with interest.
As a man I’d like to state that anyone who works hard enough or is smart enough to make enough cash to buy and reside in one of those obscenely priced houses should do so if they feel like doing so!
Its their own sweat and reward after all.
Philanthropy is not a forced activity, welcome and necessary it may be but it depends SOLELY on the goodwill of the benefactor!
That said, as an African the myth that the people you meet smiling genuinely on the streets and living on less than a dollar a day are happy folk is just that, A MYTH.
I’m from Kenya. I have a fairly decent job as an engineer and I can say I am comfortable. The vast majority of people I meet are poor and are resigned to staying poor. The smiles you see as a visitor are smiles of resignation and hopelessness.
        Don’t mistake that for joy.
Everyone here wants to live well and that my friend implies some serious money.

        • Mimi

          Well said

    • wsurfs .

If they can afford homes like these, they should have them…!!! The fact that some people live on $1 a day is sad, but does not prevent ALL people from pursuing the life they want to live…!!! No shame in that..!!

  • Salim Thalassery

Hi Andrew, think like that, being rich is not a crime provided the earnings are done in right way. All that matter is these type of people should have a great heart to help poor people. These type of rich people may need this type of prestigious house to impress or to receive their guests. it is their privilege and more people will have confidence in doing partnership business or to associate with them. this will open more ways to expand and deploy their business further and earn further. Moreover, there should be rich people to help poor people. There are many types of help one may need such as physical, mental and financial etc… So some blessed rich people with good heart is required in this world. Its a system that is implemented by the Almighty.

    • PlainSpeaker

      My dear Salim,

The Almighty must be a bachelor who allows such system for people to gather wealth and spend building such house like Antilia. I was told by a Indian professor that the owner of this house paid zero tax to Indian government most of the times. Then again, did he aalways earned it by honest way? Does he pay proper salary to people who make money for him? Can you tell us how these people made and making money even now? Please consider Tatas with the owner of this house and then talk about the Almighty.

      Best regards to you.

You people are funny you dont know liberals well they all donate to environmental causes accuse big business of corruption then live like czars its funny you are all finding remember they will rather tax other peoples companies to death keep their monies abroad then accuse repubs of greed all these houses are mostly in california in liberal stratosphere

  • Firangi

These are just five-star hotels monopolized by single-families.

  • Faisal

Just think about those millions of people. They are homeless. When you sitting in your this type of villa think, think and then what you feel.

  • Ruth Ash

Contentment is great gain be happy with what you have.

  • Jessica Dionne Abouelela

The owners of Antilia also do not live there. The place was constructed without enough eastern facing windows, so the Indian version of Feng Shui is not balanced. They use it primarily for parties only.

  • Tambayi

Lovely where are the other villas

  • shaun easton

This aritcle about the 10 ten villas was great! My favorite was the waterfront mansion, that was so beautiful. I think i could have fun with a 43,000 square foot garden. Thanks again! http://www.capetownbeachvillas.com/villas/top-20-most-luxurious-villas
